Former Vice Mayor

Denette Dunn is a paragon of community engagement and sustainability, having spent her career forging paths that bridge public service and environmental stewardship. Her journey from the private sector to notable public roles, including vice mayor and currently a Peoria’s Pine District council member, showcases her unwavering dedication to fostering sustainable development and enhancing community welfare.

Professional Foundations and Rise to Sustainability Leadership

Denette Dunn began her career mastering marketing, sales, and regional management roles. These experiences cultivated a deep understanding of business dynamics and strategic planning, which became the bedrock of her achievements in sustainability initiatives. In January 2007, Dunn made a pivotal career shift, joining Hudson Baylor Corporation as the Director of Marketing and Community Relations. This role placed her at the helm of Arizona’s largest recycling processor, where she managed critical public relations and educational outreach efforts. Her adeptness at networking with key municipal and state officials underscored her role as an essential liaison, bridging corporate objectives with community needs.

Transition to Public Service and Enhanced Community Engagement

Dunn’s transition from the private sector to public office was marked by her service on Peoria’s Boards and Commissions Subcommittee, culminating in her tenure as vice mayor. Her public service dedication blossomed when she assumed the Pine District council member role. Dunn established the Pine Citizens Advisory Committee in this capacity, aiming to ensure community voices were integral to governmental decision-making. This committee quickly grew to over 100 members, becoming a vital forum for addressing the community’s specific needs and fostering a responsive governance framework.

Expanding Roles and Legislative Advocacy

Unlike her public service roles, Dunn’s professional journey in the private sector flourished. At Republic Services, she excelled as the Municipal Services Manager, overseeing over $85 million in municipal contracts across the Southwest. This role not only involved managing extensive service agreements but also enhancing the sustainability of these operations. Simultaneously, Dunn leveraged her experience as a registered lobbyist to advocate for legislation encouraging sustainable partnerships between municipalities and private sectors, helping implement policies supporting long-term environmental stewardship.

Board Participation and Environmental Advocacy

Beyond her administrative and legislative achievements, Dunn has proactively participated on several boards that influence regional planning and environmental policies. Her contributions to the WESTMARC Board, the Peoria Planning and Zoning Commission, Tucson Clean and Beautiful’s Board of Directors, and the Solid Waste Association of North America’s Board of Directors have all been pivotal. As president and legislative liaison of the Arizona Recycling Coalition, she championed initiatives that significantly advanced recycling and reduced waste across the state, echoing her commitment to sustainable urban development.

Strategic Impact and Ongoing Commitments

From January 2007 to August 2011, during her tenure at Hudson Baylor and later at Republic Services until February 2016, Dunn played a crucial role in shaping sustainable practices within the corporate sector. Her strategic vision continued to evolve at Dickson Sweeping, where, as the Director of Marketing and Government Relations, she spearheaded significant projects that expanded the company’s services and environmental footprint. These initiatives included developing compressed natural gas fuel stations and enhancing municipal infrastructure projects, which supported environmental goals and promoted economic growth.

Since April 2019, Dunn’s role as a council member has led various strategic initiatives to improve Peoria’s sustainability and livability. Her participation in the city’s Board of Directors and the Vistancia Community Facilities District Council has allowed her to influence policies that enhance environmental sustainability and community welfare.

Philanthropic Leadership and Community Support

Denette Dunn is also deeply committed to philanthropy, focusing on enhancing educational opportunities, community health, and welfare. She actively supports You Matter Too, an anti-bullying organization, demonstrating her dedication to social welfare and community health. Additionally, her involvement with Hart Pantry and West Valley Connect highlights her commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and ensuring they receive the necessary resources and support.

Denette Dunn’s extensive career is characterized by her commitment to sustainability, adeptness at bridging the public and private sectors, and dedication to public service. Her efforts inspire significant improvements across Peoria, making her a key figure in promoting sustainable development and enhancing community engagement. Her legacy is defined by her strategic insight and enduring commitment to improving the lives of her constituents.
